Wireless Access Areas

Users who have laptops equipped with Wireless network cards can use them in Firestone Library in the following areas: 1st floor--Trustee Reading Room and Lobby, Dixon Collection Room, Dulles Reading Room (Rare Books); 2nd floor--East and West Meeting Rooms; A floor--Reserves and Periodical Reading Room and Social Science Reference Center; C floor--all three atrium reading rooms and the Microforms Service room. In addition, wireless access is available in all student study carrels on the 3rd floor, and A, B, and C floors. Wireless is also available on Firestone Plaza. In the branches, wireless may be used in the Architecture Library, Engineering Library, Fine Hall (Biology/Math/Physics), Marquand Library, Mendel Music Library, Mudd Manuscript Library, Psychology Library, Stokes Library and the Map Room at Fine Hall. Wireless network cards may be borrowed at several of the Library's circulation desks: Firestone Reserve Desk, Stokes, and Marquand.

Guest Access

Wireless access for visitors provides a connection to the Internet and to sites on campus that are open to the general public, but does not include access to Library licensed electronic resources.

Personal Wireless Access Point Devices

Connecting this type of device to the campus network is allowed within with the Library, provided users observe the following guidelines:

The device must be configured according to OIT instructions and recommendations:

The device must not be placed in such a way as to create a hazard (cable across the floor in an aisle, etc.)

The device may not occupy a port at a seat or carrel if another user wants to use that seat and port.

The device may not be left in a public area of the library. It needs to be removed after a users work session for that day is done.

Registering Your Own Laptop or Wireless Access Point Device

Users who bring personal computers or personal wireless access point devices into Firestone Library must register them with the Access Office or with Library Security. At the time of registration, a sticker will be issued that should be placed on the computer or device. When leaving the library, Security will ask to see the sticker and personal identification of the library patron. If the sticker and the identification do not match, the computer or device may be confiscated.
